Our mission
In keeping with the Seven Principles of the Unitarian Universalist
Association, the mission of the Social Action Committee is to recommend,
promote, and initiate social action or justice projects and programs
of concern to our congregation, our community, and the world at large.
We seek to cooperate and collaborate with other Unitarian Universalists
and social justice organizations (faith-based and secular) in working
together to promote peace, justice, and sustainability in our local
and global communities.
How to Get Involved
The Social Action Committee encourages UUTC members to create projects
around issues they have a personal interest in addressing. These
projects may connect individuals who feel strongly
enough about an issue that they are willing to make a
commitment to take action. Individuals seeking to
establish a social action project are encouraged to
talk with members of the Social Action Committee.
They may then complete a Social Action Committee
Project Application Form and submit it to the
committee.
Do you have an issue you would like to work on in the
coming year? Do you know of local organizations with
which you and others at UUTC might like to be more
involved? The Social Action Committee would love to
hear your ideas. Download the Social Action Committee Project
Application Form where you can detail what you
would like to do.
Synopsis of recent Social Action Initiatives
- Spring 2010 - A group of approximately 25 church members
and Brevard College students organized by Social Action
Committee member Virginia MacDonald participated in a grounds
clean-up and planting day at Stacy's House, a shelter for
abused women in Transylvania County.
- Fall 2010 - The Social Action Committee presented a Social
Action Awareness Fair to the congregation between Sunday
services. Eighteen organizations and agencies were represented
with information about their purposes and opportunities for
service.
- Ongoing - In 2010, UUTC's Social Action Committee (SAC)
surveyed the congregation to determine which social justice
causes were the most compelling for them. Those which received
the highest number of votes were selected to be the SAC cause
of a specific month during our 2010-2011 fiscal year. Each
month a specific social justice agency, organization or
cause is presented to the congregation. Donations to the
agencies are made by putting either a check or cash in
envelopes provided in the collection basket. To date, our
congrebation has generously donated to the following chosen
causes:
- July - UUTC Minister's Discretionary Fund - $1,850
- August - Sharing House - $2,511
